Our gastrointestinal system does so much work every single day. Every bite you take is processed and passed through your body in an efficient way. It is so seamless in most situations that we do not even think about these systems in our body. The problem is that we often ignore our gastrointestinal health until it is too late. It is why you have to take steps to improve your gut health today – instead of worrying about it when you are sick or old. Here are four everyday steps that you can take today to improve gastrointestinal health:
1. Eat a Diverse Diet
A lot of people get into a routine every single day. While it is okay to have the same meals everyday for a week, having the same meals everyday for a few months is not ideal. You are only getting a limited type of nutrients in your body, while the helpful gut bacteria in your body are limited.
Having a diverse diet is much better. Different fruit and vegetables, unique protein sources, and various types of nuts and seeds. You will be adding a diverse range of bacteria to your body through such a diet.
2. Diet Soda Must Go
If you care about your long term gut health, it is time to give up the diet coke and other artificially sweetened drinks. There is nothing wrong with wanting to go with diet soda over regular soda – it has less calories, which can help you when you are on a diet.
But if you truly care about your health, you must realize that zero calorie soda is still harmful in high quantities. All that fake sugar that you are adding into your body damages your gut. It promotes bad bacteria, harms the way that you process insulin and causes other issues.
3. Fiber Matters
A lot of people think that if they drink a lot of juice, they are getting all they need in terms of fruits and vegetables. It is a mistake. Even those “health” juices you see at the grocery store that include a lot of different items are not great for your body.
Why is that? Because those items do not have any fiber. When you are juicing an item, you are just taking the liquid, not the fiber that remains. It is why juicing is not good for your body, at least not nearly as good as you think.
You get some nutrients, but a ton of sugar and no fiber. Stick to whole fruits and vegetables. If you cannot have those very often, then consider blending them at home instead of buying juices.
4. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Stop watching television in bed until 3am when you have to get up at 7am! Do not check social media on your phone for hours instead of closing your eyes!
Did you know that getting seven to eight hours of sleep at night is helpful to your gut? Studies have shown that when you sleep that many hours, you are getting more beneficial bacteria growth in your gut. If you do not get enough sleep, those helpful bacteria do not show up!
These four steps will help you improve your overall health in a major way. You will have a happier gut and a healthier body!
